Curriculum
What does your child learn at school each day?
At Richard de Clare Community Academy we have a broad and balanced curriculum that is based around our core concepts:
Dream Big, Work Hard, Believe and Achieve
Our curriculum aims to create a learning environment which also reflects the key principles of The Bridge Academy Trust alongside our individual school's vision:
ENJOY - ENRICH - ACHIEVE - ASPIRE
ENJOY - Our children will have experiences throughout their time at Richard de Clare which are enjoyable and memorable. Children who are happy have a positive attitude towards their learning and will make greater progress.
ENRICH - Our children will have access to a broad curriculum which goes beyond the classroom experience. Trips, residential visits, visitors, sports, music and academic opportunities will all enrich their primary school journey.
ACHIEVE - Our children will be recognised for their achievements both inside and outside school. We know that children who experience success will believe in themselves and will consequently thrive in all areas. We aim for every child to reach their potential and be equipped with the necessary social and academic skills to progress on to the next stage of their lives.
ASPIRE - Our children will be encouraged and supported to have high expectations for themselves. The school has a growth mindset approach to learning and teaches that through hard work and determination anything is possible.
At Richard de Clare, we follow the National Curriculum which prescribes the subjects that are taught in schools and the standards that children should reach at the end of each Key Stage. We teach the requirements of the National Curriculum through termly topics which ensure children are building on prior learning.

Reading and Phonics
Reading is a high priority for all. We use the ‘Essential Letters and Sounds’ programme to develop pupils’ phonic and word recognition and show fidelity to this scheme. Reading books are carefully matched to children's growing knowledge and skills until phonics are mastered and fluency is achieved. We use the Project X Phonic books to support this. Children will then move to colour-coded levelled reading books when pupils are ready for this progression. Pupils will bring home books each day and we encourage parents to set aside some time to share these with their child. A home school reading diary supports regular contact between parents and teachers. We aim to encourage an enjoyment of reading and sharing of books to develop positive attitudes towards reading.
Religious Education
In the UK, parents retain the right to withdraw their child from Religious Education on the grounds that they wish to provide their own Religious Education; the provision of the teaching of RE then becomes a parental responsibility.
To withdraw a child from some or all RE, parents should notify the Headteacher of their intention in writing – no reason for the withdrawal is required. This can be done by emailing admin@richarddeclare.com.
